VENEZUELA: Supreme court orders dismissal of top official

The supreme court and the citizens' branch of government have displayed an unsuspected degree of political independence by ordering the government to fire a top-ranking diplomat and ban her from holding any public office until 2007. What makes the case all the more remarkable is that the official in question was renowned for having successfully managed President Hugo Chávez 's campaign for the August 2004 referendum which confirmed him in office with a 60% majority.
